Hundreds of new jobs could be created in Castle Point after the borough was earmarked as a new enterprise grant area, it emerged today.

The Government has designated Castle Point Council as an authority which will get special help.

Only nine areas in England have qualified for the scheme - including Southend,Tendring and Maldon in Essex.

Castle Point MP Christine Butler said today that she was overjoyed at the news.

The Labour MP explained the scheme was still in its early days and she was due to attend a conference in Ipswich today to find out exactly how Castle Point would benefit.

Mrs Butler said: "The Government has pinpointed assisted areas where financial assistance may be given to industry under European Community law in the interests of regional development.

"There are tier one and two areas, but Castle Point and Southend are in tier three so it is proposed support will be given to small and medium sized businesses."

She added: "I am particularly pleased because the Government has recognised we do need help and has acted.

"This is a first for Castle Point and a boost to the South East Essex Economic Partnership."

Mrs Butler has been campaigning for smaller and medium sized businesses to come to Castle Point so it can shake off its commuter borough image.

It is understood the Government will give special grants and other help to smaller businesses wanting to move into the borough. Firms will have greater access to Government and European cash under the scheme.
