It proved quite a day for Amy Blackwell in the Colchester and District Individual Tennis finals held at Frinton.

She won four of the titles at stake on Saturday including a walkover in the girls under 16 singles against her doubles partner Lauren Thompson, who had withdrawn through injury the day before.

The highlight for Amy was her victory over the more experienced Jill Crown in the ladies' open singles. The 15-year-old outplayed her opponent and powered her way to a 6-2, 6-0 victory on the show court.

The match of the day, however, was the men's open singles final between the doubles pair of Pierre Smith and Rob Twyman (The Essex).

The match proved to be one of the best finals for years. Pierre reached a 5-2 lead in the first set, but with only one break of serve his opponent pulled to 5-5.

With Smith holding serve in the 11th game he came out from the changeover playing an outstanding game to break Twyman's serve and win the first set 7-5.

The second set swung immediately in Twyman's favour with the 18-year-old left-hander playing some superb tennis to win 6-0 and take the match into a final set.

Again the match swung, but this time back into Smith's favour as he got off to a flying start. He twice broke serve and claimed his first open men's singles title with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 victory.

The two finalists had teamed up earlier in the day to win the open men's doubles final against the experienced pairing of Keith Mangum and Dave Fuller.

The youngsters came out the traps the fastest storming the first set 6-0. The second set was much tighterand went to a tie-break before Smith and Twyman clinched a straight-sets victory.

Mangum was also involved in the open mixed final with his partner Jenny Manley. However, the number one seeds were unable to handle the fluent play from Andrew Knights and Amy Blackwell as the pair from The Essex won convincingly 6-2, 6-2.

Colin Minter also performed well in the over 40s events. He made it a double win, winning the men's over 40s singles 7-5, 6-2 against Nick Crown and teaming up with Nigel Castle to win the Men's Over 40s doubles in three sets against Fuller and David Walker.
