Dean Macey was the perfect surprise guest - when he turned up at a come-and-try-it day for budding athletes.

Who better to inspire the youngsters of Castle Point - as they tasted a full range of track and field events - than British athletics' greatest all-round star?

The Canvey decathlete, a silver medallist at last month's world championships, helped out at the day, held by Castle Point Council at the Island's Waterside Farm Sports Centre.

Borough sports development officer Natalie Blyde said: "Dean's appearance was a big boost, especially as he has been very busy."

The council is launching a six-week course, from 4.30-6pm on Thursdays, September 16 to October 21.

The sessions, for eight to 12 year olds, cost £12.60 in all for leisure-pass holders - or £18.30, which includes a year's pass, for those without one.

Waterside Farm will also host a council-run junior netball course from 4.30-5.30pm on Wednesdays, from September 15. Each session costs £1.45, or 45p more for non-pass holders.
