Steve Whitton will make a decision on trialist Steve McGavin after a board meeting tomorrow.

The Colchester United boss was impressed with the former U's favourite's form when he played for the reserves against Ipswich at Layer Road yesterday.

He scored the U's goal in their 5-1 defeat but Whitton felt the striker, who won an FA Trophy winners' medal with the club in 1992, has something to offer.

Whitton confirmed: "I will be discussing the McGavin situation with the board tomorrow.

"I have a number of suggestions to put in front of them but I am not making a decision on the player until I have met the directors.

"He did very well for the reserves yesterday, much better than I expected, and I will be making a decision soon."

McGavin, 30, has just been released by Northampton Town and is desperate to rekindle the kind of form which earned him a £150,000 move to Birmingham in 1993.

He has since played for Wycombe and Southend but is training with the U's in the hope of resurrecting his career.

Whitton added: "He's one of those players who is not an out-and-out striker. He scored our goal yesterday but he has a bit more to offer than that.

"He's better running from deep because he can hurt teams with the killer touch and that's something we have lacked at times this season."

Striker Neil Gregory is also playing for his future after being placed on the transfer-list by Whitton. The former Town striker has just returned from a spell playing in the USA and showed glimpses of his former self for the reserves.

But Gregory, 27 tomorrow, is fighting for his Layer Road future and Whitton said: "He came through for the reserves and, like McGavin, he did better than I expected.

"He's on the transfer list and it's now down to him. The ball is in his court but if he gets himself back to full fitness then he will have a chance."

The U's reserves lost 5-1 against Ispwich's second string at Layer Road in the Avon Insurance Combination yesterday. Town scored through Jonas Axeldal (3), Marco Holster and Sean Friars.

Former U's defender Scott Stamps, one of the nine players released by previous mamanger Mick Wadsworth, has signed for Kidderminster.
