A player called Ollie got Great Wakering Rovers out of a fine mess at Barkingside last night as the village side took their run of games without defeat into double figures.

Rovers looked set to crash out of the Essex Senior Cup at hosts who have dropped down to a lower level of football this season in the hope of being elected to the Schweppes Essex Senior League next term when they trailed 2-1 with just seven minutes to go.

However, a great late double goal blast from Ollie Evans after 83 and 85 minutes saw Ryman League Division Three newcomers Wakering through to a third round home tie with Division One Grays.

It had all started so well for Wakering when Khan Stevens gave them a 12th minute lead. However, their hosts, showing tremendous spirit on their much-improved ground, hit back to level just before half-time.

When Barkingside took the lead in the second-half Wak-ering's run of nine games without a loss was in danger, but switching Micky Munro from defence to an influential midfield role paid dividends as Evans' twin strike settled the issue.

The victory compensated Wakering for boss Eddie Nash narrowly missing out on the Spall Sports Ryman Division Three manager of the month award for August and September which went to fellow Essex side Aveley's John Bennett.

Wakering's youngsters saw their great FA Youth Cup run come to an end when they lost 3-0 at highly-rated Stevenage in the third and final qualifying round.

In last night's Essex Thames-side Trophy, Southend Manor were beaten 2-0 by Hornchurch in a match which, although the Urchins' home game, went ahead at Southchurch Park.
