A bid for European cash to buy security cameras to crack down on vandalism in Leigh was unveiled today.

Southend Council and Leigh Town Council are hoping for European funding to help pay for CCTV cameras in Leigh Old Town.

Leigh fisherman Paul Gilson came up with the idea of using the cameras to put a stop to deliberate damage being done to fishing boats.

His wife Heather said: "Vandalism is a problem on the seafront. People come along and break bits off the boats and steal ropes and other items.

"They have been known to untie the boats when the tide is out, so when the tide comes in the boats drift out to sea.

"It is a problem but hopefully having CCTV cameras monitoring the front will put a stop to it.

"At least it might deter people from wrecking our boats."

The two councils are asking European Community fund PESCA to put up £7,000 towards the CCTV cameras.

Leigh Town Council has agreed to match the amount by providing £3,500 towards the project.

A spokeswoman for Southend Council said it would also put up £3,500 if the bid was successful.

Chairman of Leigh Town Council Mike Dolby said: "It is a good idea and hopefully will help fishermen in the area and protect their property from vandals.

" Leigh residents are paying twice for the cameras. Once through Southend Council and once through Leigh Town Council."

Leigh ward councillor Peter Wexham said: "Well done to Leigh Council for putting up the money along with Southend Council to get the CCTV cameras."
