Basildon United have a new soccer boss with Steve Wheeler, who spent a decade as manager of Schweppes Essex Senior League Bowers United, in charge at Gardiners Close.

Wheeler takes over from Colin Norman, who relinquished the Bees' hot seat on Saturday after the new towners had lost 2-1 at Concord Rangers - their tenth defeat in 17 league games this term.

Assisting Wheeler who, after his lengthy spell at Crown Avenue, went on to manage Ryman League clubs Romford and Bishops Stortford, will be Gavin Axcell, a well-known figure on the local scene who was on Southend United's books as a youngster.

Basildon director Dave Cusack, the former Southend United star, said: "Colin was instrumental in bringing a number of exciting youth players into the first team, but the style of football he played, although attractive, was not one that brought success at Senior League level."
