A huge summer festival is set to become north Essex's biggest millennium event.

The two-day spectacular will be based around a re-enactment of the Siege of Colchester.

It will take place in two fields next to the Crown Inn at Ardleigh, just off the A12.

The idea was drawn up by residents following a request from Ardleigh Parish Council but professionals have been brought in to make it a success.

It is hoped it will attract thousands of people from Essex, Norwich, London and even mainland Europe.

It will take place on Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23.

Chairman of the organising committee Jane Morgan, of Harts Lane, Ardleigh, said: "It is very ambitious but we expect thousands of people to come. We wanted to put something special on to mark the millennium and make it really memorable, educational and entertaining."

One field, where the battle will take place, will have a 17th century theme including a living encampment for 80 people.

On the other field the theme will be the 21st century with a human circus putting on four shows a day, fairground rides, roving storytellers and strolling entertainers and morris dancers.

There will be food and drink tents, and in the evening entertainment in the big top will be provided by Abba tribute band Arrival and Beatles tribute group Lennon and McCartney.

Ticket prices vary but start at £4 for children, £8.50 for adults and £21 for a family ticket.

They will be available from tourist information offices from the middle of March. Parking will be free.

All proceeds will go to charity and to fund Ardleigh's millennium green.

About £20,000 commercial sponsorship is needed and any firms interested in using a corporate marquee and guest tickets should contact Mrs Morgan on 01206 230320.

Colchester Carnival will also be held on July 22 but organisers do not think the two events will clash. The carnival starts at 5.30pm in the town centre.
