Supermarket giant Asda could show drive-in movies in the car park of its Colchester store.

Family films could be beamed on to a screen so people could watch from their cars, picking up the sound on their radios.

Or tiered seating could be organised so film fans could watch in the open air.

Shoppers could reserve a parking space and tickets would cost just £1 with all proceeds going to charity.

Screenings would start at 7pm and if successful they could become a nightly feature.

Usherettes on roller skates could sell popcorn, hotdogs and ice cream to complete the cinema experience.

The first drive-in will open in York next month and another 50 stores are likely to show one film in the summer.

A spokeswoman for Asda, which has 232 stores nationwide, today said it was likely the Colchester supermarket could be among those included in the scheme.

She said: "We cannot confirm which stores will be included in the project but we cannot rule Colchester out."

The move follows Asda's takeover by American discount chain Walmart. Drive-ins are still hugely popular in the United States.

Last year the Colchester store hosted a family entertainment night in the car park with fireworks and a funfair.

The spokesman added: "We want to provide more than just a shopping experience and give entertainment on our sites."
