Essex Police have been told to cut vehicle crime and burglary by ten per cent over five years, according to a new Government edict.
On Monday Home Secretary Jack Straw announced crime-cutting targets for all police forces.
Essex's targets are among the lowest of all police forces.
The announcement comes as police begin a high-profile burglary crackdown this week in a bid to reduce crime figures.
The week-long crackdown, the second stage of Operation Resolve, will combine high-profile policing in break-in hotspots, including homes and commercial premises, with undercover operations.
Police have also appealed to the public for help in tracing stolen property and for information on the thieves and anyone selling stolen goods.
The operation follows hot on the heels of a two-week crackdown on car crime across the county - the first stage of Operation Resolve.
