The son of a world-famous artist has died after a freak train accident.

Edwin Doubleday, son of renowned Essex sculptor John Doubleday, died after he was dragged beneath a moving London tube train.

The 23-year-old medical student was three months away from becoming a qualified doctor when he died.

The accident happened at a packed Liverpool Street Station on Saturday as Mr Doubleday was travelling home to visit his family at Goat Lodge Farm, Great Totham.

His older brother Robert, 25, said his brother's clothing was seen to catch in the door of a Central Line tube train as he tried to get off at Liverpool Street. Mr Doubleday was dragged along the platform and under the train.

Police and London Underground bosses would not comment.

Edwin was the second of John and Isobel Doubleday's three sons. He was a student in Manchester, where he was due to qualify as a doctor in June.

His funeral is at St Peter's Church, Great Totham, tomorrow.
