Asda could show drive-in movies in its Chelmsford car park.

Family films could be beamed on to a screen so that people can watch from their cars, picking up the sound on their radios.

Or tiered seating might be organised so that film fans can watch in the open air.

If the Chelmer Village supermarket is chosen, shoppers will be able to reserve a parking space and tickets will cost just £1, with all proceeds going to charity.

Screenings would start at 7pm and if successful, drive-in movies could become a nightly feature. There are already plans for usherettes on roller skates to sell popcorn, hotdogs and ice cream to complete the cinema experience.

The first drive-in will open in York next month and another 50 stores are likely to show one film in the summer.

An Asda spokeswoman said the Chelmsford supermarket could be among those included in the scheme. She said: "We cannot confirm which stores will be included, but we cannot rule out Chelmsford."

The move follows Asda's takeover by US discount chain Wal-mart. Drive-ins are still hugely popular in the States.

The spokeswoman said the aim was to give customers something more. "We want to provide more than just a shopping experience and give entertainment on our sites."
