Great Wakering Rovers have again seen one of their main Ryman League Third Division promotion rivals fail to make up ground in the race to go up.

Aveley would have moved to within one point of second-placed Wakering if they had pulled off their expected home success over Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday night.

Instead, Aveley crash-ed to a shock 3-0 home defeat and remain four points behind Rovers, who now have a game in hand.

Eddie Nash's Wakering also have played a game less than the only team above them - East Thurrock United - and will be looking for a six-point haul from visits to two struggling clubs over the next eight days.

They may not find it too easy tomorrow as hosts Abingdon Town, although third from bottom, have been showing some improved form in recent weeks.

Next Saturday Rovers visit another team having a far from happy time in the lower reaches, Dorking.

Rocks are currently two points clear of Wakering and will certainly be favourites for three points at home to struggling Camberley on Saturday. They should also win at Kingsbury in a week's time.

In between their two away League games, Burroughs Park regulars get a chance to see their Wakering favourites in action when they host Concord Rangers in an East Anglian Cup tie on Tuesday.
