Richard Wright is praying for his England chance after joining up with Kevin Keegan's squad.

The Ipswich Town keeper, who played a key role in the 2-1 win over Crewe, is in the full squad preparing to face Argentina at Wembley today.

Keegan has already indicated he wants to see Wright make his England debut before Euro 2000 and he could be handed his chance this time.

But Wright, who has been in outstanding form for Town this season, is prepared to wait to show the rest of the country what he can do.

He said: "I've been playing really well at club level and I'm just happy to be part of the atmosphere with the full squad.

"I would like to think I will get my chance to play for my country before the European Championships begin but you never know what the manager is thinking.

"The way I see it is I have two accomplished and experienced keepers ahead of me in David Seaman and Nigel Martyn and I have to be on my toes to stay in the squad.

"I am going along to put in some top performances in training at Bisham Abbey and hope the manager gives me the nod."

If Keegan had been watching Wright at Crewe he could not fail to have been impressed with the keeper's growing stature. He had no chance with Paul Tait's 64th-minute leveller but he was commanding enough to inspire Town to their 17th league game unbeaten.

Goals from Jamie Clapham and a last-minute wonder strike from Crewe old-boy Jermaine Wright handed Town the points.

Keeper Wright added: "We changed our system and adapted to it very quickly. Sometimes you have to change things around to suit different teams and we've shown we can change our style when it's necessary."
