The first Saturday morning cinema club will open its doors in Maldon tomorrow.

The club for children, based at the town hall, Market Hill, has been launched by the town council which is hoping for good response.

Doors open at 10am and all seats will be £2. The main film which is Rugrats The Movie starts at 10.30am and tickets will be on a first come first served basis.

Up to 148 children can be catered for and there will be refreshments on sale.

There has already been a good response from the public keen to see an activity provided for young people in the town.

Mayor's secretary, Barbara Larken said: "We have got a marshalling route drawn up and St John Ambulance have offered to send someone along as a first aider.

"Parents or guardians can stay with their children if they want and there will be a lucky ticket number draw during the course of the morning.

"This is very much a trial period. We have organised four dates but if it isn't successful we will not pursue the project further.

"If it is successful, though, it has been suggested we could also have one or two evening shows for older cinema goers."

The town council has received grant funding from the district council for the trial period and other dates are March 18 with Disney's Tarzan and April 15 and May 13 - films to be announced.
