Firemen went to the aid of an elderly woman last night after rain water started to leak through her roof.
The woman phoned for help about 11.15pm after she spotted water coming through her ceiling.
A crew from Canvey fire station dashed to her home in Lottem Road and patched up the roof to stop the leak.
Sub-officer Paul Marsh said: "She was in great distress as she had water coming through her ceiling due to the rain. We put a sheet on the ceiling and left her with a large bucket. That proved more than sufficient to cope with the amount of rain coming through."
The call to the emergency services came at the height of torrential rain, which caused motorists some problems this morning.
Today police reported a number of minor crashes in the area although no-one was seriously injured.
