Commuters were hit by rail chaos after a man was killed by train at Benfleet station.

Services between Shoebury and London were halted on Friday night while British Transport Police investigated the death. Disruption continued throughout the night with just a bus service running between Leigh and Pitsea.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, who today had still not been named, died on the London-bound line at Ferry Road Crossing at about 7.30pm.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious. The body was spotted on the line by a train driver.

Services were immediately halted, leaving frustrated passengers stranded at stations along the LTS Rail line.

There were irate scenes as passengers struggled to find out information about the delays. An LTS spokesman said the driver was left shocked by the accident.

She said: "He was left very traumatised - he was taken straight home."

Police were today expected to formally identify the man.
