Gurkhas based in Colchester for three years are now set to leave.

Attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots, the Gurkhas will parade at their Hyderabad Barracks base before leaving for Catterick in North Yorkshire on Friday.

The Nepalese soldiers joined the Royal Scots in 1996 to bolster the ranks amid a shortfall in Army manpower at the time.

Since joining the Royal Scots they have served twice in Bosnia and taken part in exercises in America, Kenya and Canada.

Major David Crumlish, the battalion's second in command, said the Gurkhas had done a magnificent job.

"They fitted in extremely well and, in true Gurkha style, have worked very hard. We wish them all the best in their new environment in North Yorkshire."

The remaining gap will be filled with new recruits - most from the regiment's traditional recruiting ground in Edinburgh.
