Village cricket club Twinstead has been hit for six after scooping a prestigious best-kept ground award.

Officials at Twinstead Cricket Club were bowled over when they heard about the prize - presented by the Essex Playing Fields and Children's Play Association.

Chairman John Holmes said: "This award is acknowledgement of all the hard work put in by Phil Duncalf, one of the playing members.

"We all take great interest in the ground and many people have contributed to get it up to the standard it is now but Phil must take most of the credit."

The club was presented with a cup and certificate at Essex Cricket Club's famous County Ground. Captain Bill Lucking added: "This was the first time we'd entered the competition so we were very, very pleased to do so well."

Batsman Mr Duncalf said: "It's difficult to say how many hours I spend at the ground each week. I haven't got any special techniques - it's just a lovely ground which merits an award because of its beauty."

Twinstead Cricket Club has a strong family connection. It was founded in 1952 by Clement Fowler whose daughter, Doreen Dawson, later enjoyed a spell as president.

Mrs Dawson then handed over the reins to her daughter, Pamela Harley, whose husband, Nigel, plays for the club and is also secretary.
