Highways chiefs have urged motorists to avoid using part of Braintree town centre while vital road works are carried out.

Visitors entering the town from the Chelmsford direction have been advised to use London Road and the multi-storey car park off Pierrefitte Way while improvements are carried out in Railway Street.

Drivers from the Colchester direction should follow the bypass to the London Road junction for the town centre.

Access to Freeport Designer Outlet Village, Coggeshall Road, and the Chapel Hill business area is unaffected.

The road improvement project will improve access between the above areas with the town centre.

Phase one of the work involves widening Railway Street between Victoria Street and South Street.

The second and final phase will be a new section of road linking the widened Railway Street to Lakes Road.

Paul Munson, Braintree Council's east Braintree regeneration project officer, said: "This is one of the last major changes for east Braintree and it will offer a great improvement to access.

"But in the meantime, if people plan their journey they should be able to get in and out of the town without too much problem."
