An angry resident from a new lakeside estate fears someone will be killed by the constant stream of lorries thundering down his road.

Construction work is underway on the next phase of Lakelands estate in Stanway and HGVs have to go through the estate to reach the building site.

Matthew Leech, of Sandmartin Crescent, Stanway, said: "Someone is going to get killed. We all have young children and there are ten tonne sand lorries coming by every five minutes.

"It is not the builders fault, there is no other way for them to go. Mr Leech said that alternative route with access from Warren Lane was blocked because the council had locked a gate.

"Ours is not a full-width road, it is only meant to be a crescent," he said.

"Warren Lane is a main road and there have been large lorries going down there to the sandpits for years."

But Vincent Pearce, development contract manager (north) for Colchester Council, said the council had not locked the gate.

"When we originally allowed the development there was a condition on the planning application requiring the developers to give the HGV routes they would be using to the site.

"They agreed this should be from the A12 on the north side and also along Church Road. Since then they have started using another access in Warren Lane, but they need planning permission to do that."

This planning application had now been made, but had not yet been considered by councillors.

Mr Pearce added he had complaints from residents in Warren Lane who were upset the lorries were using their road instead of the agreed route.

Paul Killoughery, director of developers Regent New Homes, said the council refused access via Warren Lane in the original planning permission.

"We ran with this for a time. But as more people moved on to the site we have wanted to use it, but the council served us with a prohibition notice which forced us to close it."
