Pagans in north Essex are teaming up to revive the nature-based religion.
Pagans from Colchester, Clacton, Braintree and Harwich have expressed an interest in forming a Colchester Pagan Council.
The organisation aims to unite Pagans to work for the environment and wildlife and offer support for the Pagan community.
A spokesperson said: "Paganism is growing in popularity all over the world. We are trying to revive and rediscover the ancient British religion that existed before Christians came to convert people.
"We believe in toleration of all beliefs and that all paths are correct for those who follow them. But we do not believe in forced conversion."
At the inaugural meeting, attended by more than 40 people, a steering committee was formed to present a package of suggested rules and a constitution.
The next full meeting of the Colchester Pagan Council will take place on Monday at the Drury Arms, Layer Road, Colchester, at 8pm.
