Brentwood School's Under 19 squash team will defend the national title they won in 1999 at Winchester Tennis and Squash Club at the same venue today.

The team, comprising brothers Phillip and Peter Barker, Daryl Selby, Andrew Cunis and David Robinson, qualified for the national finals by beating Aylesbury Grammar School 4-1 in the regional semi-final and Lancing College 3-2 in the final.

Team manager Alan Robinson said the team enters the finals as first seeds. They play Westhill Academy, Scotland in the semi-final and if successful then face the winner of the other semi-final between Wycliffe and Millfield.

"Wycliffe is the team to beat," said Alan. "Their performance this season has been outstanding but our boys have been getting special coaching and an upset cannot be ruled out."

Brentwood School's senior girls who have also qualified for the finals face an even more daunting task.

The team, comprising Lauren Selby, Lucy Barker, Lucie Bridge, Kylie Hallgate, Joanne Jones and Emma Ibrahim, are pitted against more experienced and generally older players.

If the girls reach the final, their boosted confidence may just put them in the running.
