An escalator link between Southend's High Street and seafront could be back on the agenda following an upbeat seafront meeting.

High Street traders and the council met at the Kursaal for a think tank on how to improve the town.

John Barber, chairman of Southend's Seafront Illuminations Association, said he saw the escalator as a vital part of the seafront and the town.

He said: "For years there has been a crying need for an escalator between the High Street and our members' businesses on the seafront.

"It would be welcomed by young and old as the cliffs form a natural barrier between us."

However, rumours the escalator link was on a forthcoming council agenda were denied by Mike Pressling, Southend Council's marketing director, but he supported the idea.

Members also welcomed plans to switch on the seafront illuminations on July 29 instead of the end of August and leave them on until November 4.
