Police fear an attacker who robbed and threatened to rape and murder a 22-year-old Chelmsford man could strike again.

The incident is believed to have been homosexually-motivated and police now want to trace anyone who can help them in their hunt for the assailant.

The attack happened as the electronics worker walked along Vicarage Road, Chelmsford, in the early hours of March 4.

He was then forced to go to the nearby Chelmsford College campus where he was subjected to the horrifying ordeal.

Det Con Jon Cornish, from Chelmsford CID, said: "He was grabbed round the neck in a headlock and dragged into a darkened area where he was pushed into a doorway."

He was then touched in an indecent manner by the assailant, said Det Con Cornish. The attacker robbed the victim of a small amount of cash and threatened to kill him. Police believe a knife may have been used in the attack.

"I am keen to trace members of the public who must have been walking back from pubs and clubs," said Det Con Cornish.

"This kind of attack is particularly nasty and we are keen to catch the suspect before another incident happens."

With hundreds of youngsters on the Chelmsford College site during the week, the threat of a repeat attack is even more frightening.

Det Con Cornish told the Gazette that the victim - who sustained minor injuries - is now scared to venture outdoors after dark.

"That night and the following day he was very shaken and now he's fearful of going out at night. This is totally alien to his way of life," Det Con Cornish said.

Police have no description of the assailant because the victim was always held with his back to him and had no chance to see his face.

But anyone who may be able to help with inquiries is urged to contact Chelmsford CID on 01245 491212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
