Waiting times for elderly patients to see medical specialists are being slashed thanks to a trial scheme in Colchester.

Instead of waiting up to 13 weeks for an appointment, patients can be referred to the rapid assessment clinic within 24 to 72 hours.

During appointments, patients are seen by a specialist care of the elderly doctor, nursing staff and, if appropriate, other healthcare professionals.

The clinic is held on weekdays in the Gainsborough wing of Colchester General Hospital and tests patients are given - including blood tests, ECGs, X-rays and CT scans - could have previously meant three visits to hospital.

Treatments include blood transfusions and fluid therapy and follow-up appointments are arranged as necessary.

Dr Paul Dixon, a consultant physician based at the Gainsborough wing, is responsible for the initiative.
