Schools in Essex will continue to operate on the current three-term year until at least 2002.

Councillors have agreed term times for the school year 2001/2002 although a working group will soon be set up to review the current patterns and report back at the end of this year.

Professional associations and headteacher associations are in favour of retaining the three-term year for 2001/2002 with breaks at Christmas, summer and Easter.

Teachers will work 195 days in the school year, of which five will be non-pupil days arranged to meet schools' individual needs.
