The annual meeting of Chelmsford Golf Club last Saturday marked the end of the year for the 1999/2000 men's captain Don Seager and the beginning for incoming captain Dick Bush.

Sunday saw the putting out on the 18th for the retiring captain and the drive in ceremony for the incoming one.

Prior to these two events a plaque marking the millennium was set into the ground at the base of the millennium tree by ladies captain Linda Parrott and now former Men's captain Don Seager.

With this dedication finished, Don Seager went to the 18th and duly putted out, thus relinquishing his role as captain.

The arrival of a buggy laden with bushes at the back was a giveaway to the captain's lane.

The task set was for him to score past the goalkeeper, none other than the club professional Mark Welch guarding a hastily erected goal and clothed in the finest of footballing outfits.

The difficulty was the ball was a smallish football which had to be hit with an oversize club, standing on a two foot high tee peg.

However the third attempt was made, kicking the ball from the teeing ground and as football writers often declare, the ball hurtled into the back of the net leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

After that the serious drive-in was completed with a drive that finished up neatly on the 10th fairway.

The week also marked the opening match of the Retired Members Group who fielded a team under their Captain Bill Williams against one led by ladies captain Linda Parrott.

The Ladies played off their own card and were given courtesy shots appropriate to their handicap.

The results was a well fought match with only 18 points separating the teams - Ladies 508, RMG 490.

The final of the Ladies Winter Cup was held at the weekend, the two finalists being Maureen Quinn and Bridget Williams.

The match was played out with neither finalist getting any sizeable lead to coast home on, and the match entered the final four holes with Maureen Quinn holding a one hole lead.

Although nervousness was visible in both players, Maureen held her lead and finished one up to become the 1999 Winter Cup winner.

Members of Chelmsford Golf Club will be sorry to hear that Jim Greenwood has finally lost his battle with his illness.

Jim put up a terrific fight to the end which was typical of his younger days as an Army boxer and all-in wrestler.

Driving in: New Chelmsford Golf Club Mens Captain Dick Bush is watched by a good attendance of club members as he drives in for his year of office, Dick having taken over as captain from the 1999/2000 captain, Don Seager.

The Channels Golf Club Ladies' March Monthly Medal found Tina Daw again in the spotlight, this time as winner of the Silver Division with her gross 95, handicap 20, net 75.

The Bronze Division was won by Pam Howard who returned a 110,32,78 scoreline.

The Men's March Medal has also been played.

The Division One leader was Immediate Past Captain Chris Simmons who returned a gross 83 and with his 12 handicap, a net 71.

Second by two shots, and playing off the same 12 handicap to produce a net 73 was Malcolm Standish.

Division Two produced cores that guarantee new handicaps. Adam Rowe continued a run of good scores to win this division with a gross 77, handicap 15, net 62.

Even then he had to rely on winning on countback from Phil Brown who scored a gross 84 which, deducting, his 22 handicap left him, Phil, with the same net 62.

However Adam made sure that this would be a round to remember by also taking the "Scratch Prize" by one stroke with his gross 77 -- a good result for a Division Two player.

The Forrester Park Golf Club men's section winter league quarter finals knockouts took place with the following pairs progressing to the semi-finals; Hoffman/Hoffman v Atkinson/Cornwell and Macdonald/Philpott v Stuart/Fletcher.

The semi-finals are scheduled to be played this Sunday (March 26).

In addition, the men's section played a Team Texas Scramble with the winners being Williams/Chamberlain/Banyard/Austwick 57.2 points on countback from runners up Crowe/Miller/Cove/Andrews also on 57.2 points.

Having hit some 200 practice balls, Regiment Way's own "Cuddly Dudley" Joyce and his lady partner Clare "Woolly" ventured out to play the final of the third Regiment Way Mixed Winter Knockout.

His intensive practice paid off in this his third attempt at this particular final when Dudley and Clare gained their win over John "The Cash" Cass and his partner Sue "Bish Bash Bosh" Bishop.

A recent report said that M E Daw was second in the medal. It should have read that Roddy McLeod was the one in second place with his score of 90,27,63.
