A motorist was seriously injured after his car was ripped to pieces during a road crash.

Debris was scattered across the A12 about 150 yards from the Kelvedon slip road after the accident on Saturday evening.

Emergency services were rushed to the site of the crash and the man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital.

PC Roger Manser, of Stanway Traffic Police, said: "It was a real big mess and the car has been ripped to pieces. Debris went everywhere."

The driver of the white Renault Clio collided with the central reservation and the near side barrier before being flung from his car.

The crash happpened at 6.10pm on the Colchester-bound section of the carriageway.

A spokesman for Essex Police said the man was the sole occupant of the Renault car, and no other vehicle was thought to have been involved.

Long tailbacks developed along the A12 as emergency personnel tried to clear the road. The A12 was closed off for a time and traffic was diverted through Kelvedon.

Stanway Traffic Police are hoping to contact anyone who saw the car before the crash, or those who witnessed the accident.

Anyone with information should contact PC Manser on 01206 762512.
