It will be just the ticket for transport worker David Walker when he takes part in the London Marathon.

David, who works for London Transport, is hoping he won't need rescuing by his workmates when he runs the 26-plus mile course on Sunday, April 16 to raise cash for a children's care project.

The 44-year-old will be pounding the streets of the capital to raise funds for Christopher's Cottage, a care facility for children with special needs. It is planned to be built next to the St Christopher School, Mountdale Gardens, Leigh.

David, from Westbourne Grove, Southend, works in Kensington and his wife, Sandra, 36, has been working as an administrator at the school since June last year.

The care centre, which will be managed by the school and Southend Mencap, will look after children with learning difficulties.

Planned facilities include residential areas, a sports hall, and occupational therapy areas, and the Social Services and Southend Education Authority will fully support the scheme.

He is hoping to raise more than £1,000 to hand over to the school. Builders start work on the ambitious £1 million project in November.
