A cyclist fears changes to a road will endanger the lives of cyclists and is calling on residents to urge the council to have a rethink.

Peter Fox, a computer analyst, of Tees Close, Witham, claims the plans to turn Guithavon Street, Witham, into a one-way road will force cyclists to use other unsafe routes.

He said he had already written to Essex County Council about his concerns. The one-way proposal is still set to go ahead.

He said: "The alternative roads are unsuitable and increase the dangers to cyclists.

"Second-rate or downright unsafe plans are major obstacles to cycling. This is not the way to get people out of their cars and reduce congestion."

He also wants to more facilities for commuters who cycle to the railway station.

Mr Fox is holding a public meeting next Tuesday at the town's White Horse pub, in Chipping Hill, to rally the support of residents in the town.

He will also be calling for cyclists to launch their own organisation, which would give them a greater voice in the town.

Mr Fox said the organisation could also promote cycling for all ages and run road safety sessions.

He said: "The whole of Witham would benefit if people got out of their cars and on to their bikes. The main problem at the moment is people are afraid to use the roads.

"By running road safety session, we could encourage more people to have the confidence to use their bikes."

Essex County Council was unavailable for comment.
