Anglia Polytechnic University's department of life science has been given an "excellent" rating by a Government inspection team.
The team was at the university for four days last month.
Mike Davies, dean of applied sciences, said: "This was truly a team effort by the department and we are very pleased with this recognition of their professionalism.
"Everyone in the department, both academic and technical, was involved in the preparation for the visit and their enthusiasm was evident."
The department scored highly in aspects including curriculum design, content and organisation, teaching, learning and assessment, student support and guidance, learning resources and quality management and enhancement.
