If Brentwood Swimming Club coach Dave Pettengell was on 'cloud nine' after the first round of the Essex county championships, he was most definiytely 'over the moon' following the second weekend of county competition.

Brentwood swimmers landed their best ever weekend haul of 20 medals, consisting of eleven golds, six silvers and three bronzes as well as seven other final placings.

Ten national qualifying times were also achieved and this excellent team performance so far keeps Brentwood in second position for the overall Essex club championship trophy, in front of a large number of much bigger clubs.

Three exiting team performances started with the womens open 400 metre freestyle relay, which saw Jessica Kneller, Rebecca Richards, Ashley Harvey and Phillipa Davies lead all the way to determinedly take the gold medal.

The mens open 400m medley relay team of Ross Hughes (back), Ben Hughes (breast), Jay Vincent (fly) and Lee Rich (free) had to settle for a silver medal after a battle royal with the Redbridge team.

The girls junior 4 x 50m medley team of Alex Willoughby (back), Lauren Cogdale (breast), Phillipa Davies (fly) and Rebecca Richards (free) also took the silver after another exiting battle with a Redbridge team.

In the individual events, Ross, Phillipa, Lauren and Alex led the gold medal charge.

Ross Hughes won four gold medals and set three new championship event best times in the boys 16 years 200 metre individual medley, 100m back stroke and 400m freestyle, with the other gold coming in the 200m freestyle. Ross also took a bronze in the 100m breaststroke.

Phillipa Davies continued her run of good form taking three golds in the girls 16 years 200 and 400 metre freestyle events as well as the 200m individual medley, she also won a bronze in the 100m back stroke and was first reserve for the 100m breast.

Lauren Cogdale, swimming in the girls 12 years age group, stormed to two golds from two swims, winning the 200m individual medley and the 100m breaststroke.

Alex Willoughby completed a memorable double, having won her first gold at the previous meet, she followed up with another in the girls 16 years 100m backstroke.

More place medals went into the Brentwood coffer's with Christie Mecklenburgh taking two silvers in the girls 12 years 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke.

Lee Rich also won two silver medals in the boys 19 years and over 200m individual medley and the 100m backstroke.

Ben Hughes won bronze in the boys 17/18 years 200m butterfly and finished in fourth place in the 200 individual medley.

Other Brentwood swimmers to make finals were Charlene Glover, who was fourth in the 200m butterfly, fifth in the 400m freestyle and sixth in the 100m breast in the girls 13 years events.

Jessica Kneller swimming in the girls 17/18 years was fourth in the 200m individual medley and fifth in the 200m butterfly and Tom West finished sixth in the boys 12 years 200 individual medley.

Further notable swims were made by Emily Cole, Emily Fitch, Katie Gorman, Ashley Harvey, Sarah Holdsworth and Rebecca Sutton who all produced personal best times over the weekend.
