Green gardeners can get even greener thanks to Rochford Council's home composter deal.

The Dalek-like tubs will once again be on offer on May 7 for everyone who wants to start being a bit more environmentally friendly with their garden and kitchen waste.

Using the tubs can save money for householders as they are making their own compost. They are also cut council spending as less waste is being sent to landfill sites.

A council spokesman said around 7,000 omposters have already been sold at a reduced price thanks to subsidies.

He said: "That's one in five households, making us one of the leading authorities in Essex when it comes to selling home composters.

"However, the subsidised scheme is due to end in November this year, so people really need to take advantage of the offer soon."

The final one-day composter and water butt sale will take place at Websters Way car park, Rayleigh between 10am and 3pm.

Only Rochford residents will be eligible to take advantage of the sale, where the home composters will be on offer at £9 and the water butts at £12.

Matthew Rowland-Jones, Rochford's recycling officer, said: "We have sold around 7,000 composters so far and have less than 3,000 to sell in order to meet our sales target.

"The sale will be the last chance residents will have to buy a home composter from us at such a bargain price.

"Any resident who does want one, I would advise them to come along to the sale to avoid disappointment."

If you want a home composter but are unable to attend the sale the council can arrange for one to be delivered to your door at a small charge.
