Youngsters at a Rochford school have been finding out how exciting science can be.

Hundreds of pupils at the King Edmund School in Vaughan Close took part in a series of events and challenges organised by the school's science department to mark National Science Week.

These included building rockets out of lemonade bottles which could carry an egg into the air and land it safely, making buggies and racing them, writing poetry about science and unmasking a science department burglar using scientific sleuthing.

Science teacher and event co-ordinator Lisa Davis said: "The aim was to build up the enthusiasm many of the pupils already have for science and to show them other aspects and applications of science they would not normally see in their lessons."

In focus - pupils Mark Levett, Anthony Searles and Peter Weller
