The first event at Channels Golf Club last weekend was for the Ladies Rover Cup.

This stroke play competition was won by Pam Pamphilon who returned a gross 94, handicap 23 and a net 71. Fran Thomas was second on 97, 25, 72 scoreline followed by Jacky Cato's 79, 5, 74.

On Sunday morning Channel's Paul Cooper and Andy Francis were secured a home 6&5 win in the 'Daily Mail Foursomes" against a pair from Maldon Golf Club.

Later on the same day it was the turn for mixed couples to take part in the Club's Quadrangle Qualifier.

This foursomes match was won by Maureen and Bill Woollcott on 35 points. Sandra Bramley and Dave Morley were second on 33 followed by Pam Pamphilon and son Gavin Wood who scored 32.

The other five pairs that will represent Channels in the Quadrangle Match to be played at the Warren Golf Club on April 15 are the Lady and Gentleman Captains, Brenda and Tony Stubbings, Ivy and Charlie O'Brien, Joan and John Charlton, Ann Malyon and son Chris plus Karen and Peter Baxter.

The four clubs that will be represented at The Warren are, The Warren, Chelmsford, Frinton and Channels.

The current holder of the Trophy is Chelmsford Golf Club who won it at the second attempt last year at Frinton G.C, the original match having been rained off.

Another event to come to a conclusion was the Ladies Winter Eclectic. The Silver Division was won by Tina Daw who secured a final score of 62.5

The Bronze Division winner was Pam Pamphilon with a final score of 61.25.

On Monday the Channels Ladies' "Mail on Sunday" team played their third round of this national competition and were successful in a home match against Maldon Golf Club.

Channel's Tina Daw won 5&3, Karen Bennett 5&4 and Lesley Thomas 3&2.

Fran Thomas was the only Channels loser and she went down 3&1 to Maldon's Zoe Harris who putted extremely well on the day.

Chelmsford Golf Club's Mens Leslie Wood team visited Birch Grove in the preliminary round to the first round of the Essex County Inter-Club Trophy.

Birch Grove is one of the newer courses in Essex consisting of five par 3's and four par 4's in a nine hole configuration played round twice for an 18 hole competition.

The task set for Chelmsford was whether they could adapt their usual game to one that revolved around irons of the tee and chip and runs to make the greens.

In the event they all but succeeded.

After the morning foursomes the score was level at two and a half matches each, the County having adapted the Mail on Sunday format of the last match going out again if the final score is even.

With 10 singles in the afternoon both sides had all to play for.

Chelmsford moved 5-3 ahead, but then with other matches coming in it moved to 5-5, then to 6-6, then to 7-6 for Chelmsford, back to level at 7-7.

It appeared that the last match might have to go down the first as they were level coming into the 16th green. However, Chelmsford lost the hole going down with two to play.

An opportunity presented itself on the 18th but Chelmsford's putt was just too strong, hitting the hole but staying out so the final score was Birch Grove 8, Chelmsford 7.

The Chelmsford team was captained by Julian Clark and the team players were John Harris, Tony Nicholas, Peter Tourle, Jon Sliney, Paul Adams, Robert Wade, John MacGregor, Michal Beard, Murray Massic and Phil Smith.

The Ladies have played for the Enid Christy Shield which was presented by the late Enid Christy in 1960.

The shield has its origins in China when a Chinese Mandarin presented the Shield to Mrs Christy in recognition of her educational work for the Mandarin's children.

The winner was Beryl Gardiner with a nett 73 and she was presented with the shield by Mrs Christy's daughter Heather Hornbrook.

The runner up was Iris Fountain with a nett 76.

Following this competition was the Ladies March Stableford and the Silver Division winner with 37 points was Trish Wilson and the Bronze winner with 39 points was Bridget Logan.

Off the course, the Club members enjoyed a mixed games evening initiated by Sue May, social director with the games hostess, Angela Hawkins doing sterling work on the night.

The winning team was Alan Church, June Church, John Oxlade, Cemone Gibbins, Mike Robinson, Manny and Stephan Rodrigues and M. J. Crumpen.
