More women volunteers are needed for a pioneering study into the prevention of breast cancer.

Extra funding has been given to the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study and one of the bases for the study is the Breast Unit at the Chelmsford and Essex Centre in New London Road, Chelmsford.

The additional funding from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and The Cancer Research Campaign has allowed more time for volunteers to be recruited by the 22 centres around the UK carrying out the study.

Breast cancer specialist surgeon Paul Sauven, principal investigator for the project in the Chelmsford area said: "This study is the best chance we have to determine whether we can prevent breast cancer with Tamoxifen.

"The outcome of the study will benefit generations to come. I am pleased that the study has been extended and recruitment in Chelmsford can continue."

A total of 150 women are already taking part in the study at the breast unit at the Chelmsford and Essex Centre and another 20 women are needed to enter the study before the end of this year.

Women aged between 35 and 70 who have a family history of breast cancer who would like to take part in the study can call 01245 513343 for more details.
