Four people were taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning (Friday) after a car drove the wrong way down the A127.
Police are appealing for witnesses after a VW Golf, driven by a 19-year-old Bulphan woman going the wrong way collided with an Escort and a Mondeo on the Southend-bound lane near the Fortune of War at Laindon
Firefighters spent 40 minutes cutting the woman driver free from her car.
The other casualties were her 16-year-old passenger from Stanford-le-Hope, the 18-year- old male driver of the Escort and the 50-year-old Mondeo driver from Pitsea. None of the casualties were seriously hurt.
Sub-officer Brian Chamberlain of Basildon fire station, said: "It could have been an accident with a lot of fatalities."
Police said that one person involved has been reported for traffic offences.
