Disabled rower Andrew Halsey has abandoned his epic attempt to row across the Pacific Ocean.

Epileptic Mr Halsey, 42, from Clacton, was picked up by a Korean fishing boat yesterday after sending an emergency signal, the Ocean Rowing Society said.

Colleagues at the society had been planning to resupply the rower with food and medication when he asked to be rescued.

Mr Halsey was aiming to make history by single-handedly rowing across the Pacific.

Because of bad weather conditions, he fell behind schedule but was averaging 30 miles a day.

Mr Halsey now lives in Camden, north London, but his parents still live in Avondale Road, Clacton. He left San Diego, America, on July 15 last year in the 28ft Brittanny Rose, and had been aiming to travel the 7,000 miles to Sydney, Australia, in eight months.
