David Johnson will not be disclipined for his petulant shove on Ipswich Town team-mate Jim Magilton.

The Town striker has been widely condemned after pushing his hand into the face of the Northern Ireland international midfielder during Tuesday night's 1-1 draw against West Brom at The Hawthorns.

But Town chief George Burley insisted the matter was dealt with in the confines of the dressing room and claimed Johnson - who was immediately substituted - has apologised for the incident.

Burley said: "I won't let this kind of thing happen in my side. David Johnson was taken off for disciplinary reasons but he understands what he has done is wrong.

"He has apologised for what he did because he understands why he was taken off. It has been dealt with within the dressing room but he isn't going to be disciplined.

"He hasn't been fined and he will be in the squad for Saturday's game against Port Vale. It is a shame because he was playing well and looked very lively, but I can't let things like that happen in my teams.

"I don't think we'll ever see him do something like that again and as far as I am concerned the matter is now closed."

The flashpoint occurred in the 57th minute when the Town forward waltzed around West Brom's keeper before firing wide from less than six yards out.

It provoked a furious verbal assault from Magilton and Johnson reacted by pushing the Town midfielder in the face.

Ipswich had fallen behind to Lee Hughes's First-half strike but they fought their way back into the game when Matt Holland levelled in the 67th minute.

The result left Town in fourth place in the First Division.
