A mother has vowed to fight a decision to expel her 11-year-old son from school after he lashed out at a headteacher.

The decision to exclude the boy came after he injured two teachers in a struggle at the Robert Drake Primary School in Church Road, Thundersley, last week.

The boy, who cannot be named, hit out at headteacher Susanne Pipe and a teaching assistant after they tried to restrain him in front of his classmates.

Both members of staff suffered bruising as a result of the attack but quickly returned to work after the incident. The youngster was initially suspended but now governors and staff at the school have decided he should be expelled.

The boy's mother today said she was going to fight the decision.

She said: "I will be going to appeal against the exclusion. They are playing with my son's future. I am keeping him at home at the moment. He is only a child and I hope this is not going to affect him emotionally.

"I hope that not going to school will not bother him. He is going to miss his friends."

A spokesman for Essex County Council's education department said the expulsion would be open to an appeal.

He said: "There is an appeal for any child that has been excluded."

It is believed the incident was sparked off after the boy allegedly became so unruly in class that he needed to be restrained.
