One of the county's top police officers was involved in a collision with one of the force's patrol cars.
Essex Deputy Chief Constable Charles Clark was left uninjured following the four-car shunt on the A12 at Hatfield Peverel on Friday afternoon.
Mr Clark, who was travelling in an unmarked car at the time, was involved in a collision with an Essex Police car and two other vehicles.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "It was a minor non-injury accident."
The spokesman said he was unable to release names or details of those involved in the collision.
