A high-profile crackdown on street beggars is to become a regular feature in Colchester.
The fortnight-long operation targeted aggressive beggars in particular, but also tried to reduce other problems caused by the homeless.
Street people were talked to by officers from the town's community policing team and given advice and help from specialist organisations.
But if the homeless persisted begging, they were warned or even arrested. During the operation, 20 people were warned and three were arrested and put into the court system.
Sgt Kevin Jacobs said: "The operation went reasonably well. I think now the better weather has come we need to focus more sharply on it."
He said there was a noticeable increase in offences related to begging and drinking as summer temperatures arrive.
The operation has also been a useful intelligence -gathering exercise. Sgt Jacobs said: "Following our inquiries we have found the homeless situation has not got worse, it is fairly static.
"We will continue to put people in touch with the various agencies that can help. It is a balancing act between trying to help them and stop them begging."
