A kind-hearted couple decided to celebrate 40 years of a first class marriage - by raising cash for the post office.
When Peter and Hazel Ward, of Witham Road, White Notley, wanted to mark their ruby wedding anniversary they decided to give the village's post office the stamp of approval too.
They decided they could do without presents on their big day and so asked family and friends to make contributions to the local shop instead.
When pals and family attended a special party they brought cash for the post office instead of cards and gifts.
The generosity of their friends and family raised £400 for the important community store.
Mr Ward, a farm manager for Strutt and Parker, said: "We think it's such a shame so many village post offices are under threat.
"It's something we feel very strongly about because they're a key part of village life. We were delighted to raise so much money - it just goes to show what good friends we've got.
"Hopefully it can be used not only to maintain the post office but also to upgrade it as well, because it's quite a basic building."
Delighted Brenda Bright, who runs the The Street premises, said: "The news has come as fantastic boost - it's a wonderful gesture and a fantastic example of community spirit."
