Controversial play equipment in a children's play area is to be removed - at a cost of up to £8,000.

The aerial runway in Doggetts Playspace, Rochford, has roused strong feelings from nearby residents who say it has become a focal point for foul-mouthed older youths to gather, causing disturbance and litter.

But while those nearby have been angered by the scheme, two petitions of 95 and 52 signatures have also been collected against the removal of the runway - signed by some youngsters who enjoy using it. Those against the runway have gone as far as appealing to Southend East and Rochford Conservative MP Sir Teddy Taylor.

His response was to suggest that the playspace be closed at night as a compromise for the needs of children and residents.

A meeting of Rochford District Council's finance and general purposes committee saw members approve funds for the removal of the offending playground equipment.

Councillor Maureen Vince (Labour, Rochford St Andrews) said: "Children need a stimulating environment and need to experience safe excitement.

"I am often passing that play space late at night and so far have witnessed no trouble."

Coun Peter Webster (Conservative, Whitehouse) said: "My sympathies are totally and completely with the residents who suffer with this day in and day out."

A full council meeting will now discuss re-locating the aerial runway equipment within the general area.

The cost of removing the runway and putting it in a different location is estimated around £6,000.
