A Southminster schoolgirl, who has become one of the youngest hockey players to be chosen at under 16 level, helped England to victory in the home Internationals tournament at Milton Keynes at the weekend.

Jojo Anderson, 14, was in the England Under 16 side that finished unbeaten in the tournament, drawing 2-2 with Scotland on Friday, crushing Wales 5-1 on Saturday and defeating Ireland 3-0 on Sunday.

She played defensive midfield in all three games.

A pupil at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Suffolk, Jojo still has two years to gain experience at under 16 level.

Her PE teacher, Mrs Sheila Bruce, said: "Jojo is the first girl from the school to achieve a national honour in hockey and we are very proud of her."

Jojo said that she was delighted to have helped England to victory last weekend, and that her ambition is to one day be a member of the Great Britain hockey team at an Olympic Games.

Jojo is quite an all-round sportsgirl. Three years ago she represented Great Britain in the Cadet class dinghy world championships in India, and she is also a county standard gymnast and cross-country runner.

Hockey talent, however, is something that appears to run in the family.

This weekend at Redbridge, Jojo and her young sister Charlotte, 13, who also plays in midfield, both represent Suffolk Schools Under 15's in the Eastern Counties Championships.
