The deputy headteacher of a Braintree school has been suspended after parents alleged she had been "heavy handed" with their son.

Mrs Rachel Drury, who teaches at Chapel Hill Community Primary School and Nursery in the town, was suspended on March 21.

She will remain away from work while an investigation takes place.

In a letter to parents informing them of his decision, headteacher, Keith Lloyd, said: "There are strict procedures laid down in respect of all child protection issues to ensure that a fair and thorough investigation is made into this matter.

''The suspension is a neutral act which does not imply any guilt.

"While this investigation is continuing I am restricted from making further comments about it.

''But I can assure you that as soon as the matter has been resolved I will let you know."

A spokesman for Essex County Council's education department said: "In the event of any child protection allegation it is important that the person is not in school so that a full and thorough investigation can take place into what actually happened."

Mr Lloyd this week declined to comment further on Mrs Drury's suspension.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said: "We have been informed and are investigating this allegation."
