Steve Whitton admitted he had been given a huge lift after watching Colchester United's reserves grind out a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

The U's boss, still reeling from the 3-0 humiliation at Wycombe last weekend, saw Jack Wignall's goal earn the home side a point in the Avon Insurance Combination League on Tuesday.

Whitton, who was impressed with the performances of Wignall, KK Opara and former Ipswich player Chris Keeble, said: "After the weekend we've just had it was most encouraging.

"There were a lot of young players and they played very well against a strong Fulham side.

"As soon as we are safe from relegation I might think about throwing a few of them in during a Second Division game to see whether they can perform at a higher level."
