A man sent from his home in Bangladesh to find a wife has been sentenced to a total of two months in prison for indecently assaulting two women.

Abdul Ahad, 27, of no fixed abode, admitted the charges and appeared before Colchester magistrates on Wednesday for sentencing.

The court heard Ahad's six month visa had run out and he faced deportation.

Annette Redgrave, prosecuting, said the first offence occurred Ahad approached a woman, claiming he knew her, outside BhS in Colchester on March 21, asked her to go for a drink, then took hold of the 20-year-old and said he would not let her go until she kissed him. The victim managed to break free, said Mrs Redgrave.

Then on March 22, Ahad indecently assaulted a 16-year-old in Castle Park, after again claiming he knew her.

Lucy Osborn, mitigating, said Ahad was sent to this country by his family to seek marriage, but had now been completely disowned for the shame he had brought on them.

She said he had found the cultural differences quite shocking and was not used to seeing young people in the street openly showing affection to one another.

"He is extremely sorry for what he has done and had no intention of scarring or frightening these woman," she said.
