The weekend saw plenty of action for members of the Glendene C.C. in far from perfect conditions for cycling.

No doubt, thoughts were on those riders who flew out to Majorca on Saturday morning, for two weeks of warm weather training!

The first riders in action were at Eastway circuit on Saturday morning in the Spring Rumble.

Weather conditions were from spring like with riders having to endure the appalling rain and wind.

In the Under 14s race Edward Whitehorn was second in a 10 mile race, while his elder brother Richard had to settle for third place in the 24 mile event for Juniors, Women and fourth category riders.

Dean Wakelin, the club's first category rider rode in the senior race of the promotion to be placed seventh.

On Sunday Wakelin was in action again in the Lancaster Mercedes Grand Prix at Welwyn Garden City.

In a race of 93 miles, Wakelin, racing against the top professionals in the country, acquitted himself well by finishing in the main bunch.

Further afield, Tony Woodcock travelled to Yorkshire to ride in the Halifax Imperial Wheelers Road Race, the first race in the Peter Fryer Veterans Series.

Tony was one of six riders who broke away early on in the race, but he was no match for his companions in the final reckoning.

However, he has a good base to build on for the other four races in the series. On the local scene, most riders were racing in the Harlow Road Races at Hatfield Heath.

In the fourth category race over 30 miles, Nick Farrer finished his first road race in 16th place. Savash Saffat was placed 23rd.

Phil Whitehorn was sprinting for fourth place when he was involved in a crash and was not placed in the final result.

In the second race, over 40 miles for riders up to second category, Brett Travers was in a break that went away after ten miles, but was caught with ten miles to go.

Best of the Glendene finishers were Terry Devine in eighth place and Richard Whitehorn, 11th. Tony Couchman and Mark Porter also rode and finished in the main bunch.

The Time Triallists were out in force on the old A11 in North Essex for the Easterley R.C. 25-mile event.

Murat Ozdenya was pleased with his fourth place after suffering from a cold during the week.

His time of 1h 0m 57s squeezed Nigel Harris's time of 1h 1m 31s into fifth place.

Richard Shaw (1h 6m 50s) and Paul Gilfoyle (1h 7m 23s) also rode, but their times reflected the bad conditions on the morning.
